Business activities

The Lufthansa Group is an aviation group with global operations. It consists of five business segments, which encompass the areas of passenger transportation and airfreight, as well as downstream services: Passenger Airline Group, Logistics, MRO, Catering and IT Services. All the segments are market leaders in their respective areas. Lufthansa Group comprises a total of almost 500 subsidiaries and associated companies.

Organisation

Deutsche Lufthansa AG has the management and supervisory structures typical for companies in Germany. The Executive Board is responsible for managing the Company; it defines its strategic direction and strives for sustainable increases in its value. The Supervisory Board appoints, advises and supervises the Executive Board. Deutsche Lufthansa AG is the parent company and at the same time the largest single operating company in the Group. The individual business segments are run as separate Group companies, with the exception of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines within the Passenger Airline Group segment. They have their own profit and operating responsibility and are monitored by their respective supervisory boards, in which members of Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Executive Board are also represented.

Strategy

The Lufthansa Group has set itself four key strategic goals towards which it orientates its conduct and its business performance. These goals are

  • to increase company value,
  • to expand the leading market position of our airlines and service companies by actively shaping the aviation industry,
  • to continually improve customer satisfaction, and
  • to run an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable business

The Lufthansa Group employed some 118,000 personnel at the end of 2013, and achieved total operating revenue of EUR 30 billion for the year.

Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group is an aviation group with global operations and a total of almost 500 subsidiaries and associated companies. It consists of five business segments, which encompass the areas of passenger transportation, airfreight and airline services: Passenger Airline Group, Logistics, MRO, Catering and IT Services. All of the business segments occupy a leading position in their sectors and in some cases are the global market leaders.

The airlines constitute the core business segment of the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa Passenger Airlines, SWISS and Austrian Airlines enjoy an outstanding reputation in the market as quality airlines. The equity investments in Brussels Airlines and SunExpress round off the airline portfolio. In 2013, the airline group defended its leading role in Europe, again recording the greatest number of passengers and the highest revenue of any European airline. The Logistics segment is also a market leader in international airfreight. As well as standard freight, its product portfolio covers express freight and special cargo.

The MRO, Catering and IT Services segments complete the Lufthansa Group’s product portfolio, offering the full spectrum of services for the airlines within the Group as well as for external clients. Lufthansa Technik is the global market leader in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of commercial aircraft. The Catering segment is also the global number one in its area. LSG Sky Chefs supplies national and international carriers with airline catering. In addition, it increasingly operates in adjacent markets. The IT Services segment is one of the leading IT service providers to the airline industry.
